How Silver Costs Affect Independent Makers
If you’ve shopped for handmade jewellery recently, you may have noticed prices are higher than they were a few years ago. While there are several factors behind this, one of the biggest challenges facing independent jewellery makers today remains the cost of silver.
As a small business creating sea glass jewellery, we wanted to share a little insight into what’s happening behind the scenes and how rising material costs continue to affect makers like us.

Silver Prices Remain High
Silver prices have experienced significant fluctuations over the past year, reaching record highs before easing back somewhat. While prices may move up and down from month to month, silver remains considerably more expensive than it was just a few years ago.
For jewellery makers who rely on sterling silver for chains, settings, clasps, ear wires, and handcrafted components, these higher costs have a direct impact on every piece we create.
The Challenge for Small Businesses
Large jewellery brands often have the advantage of purchasing materials in huge quantities and negotiating lower prices. Small independent businesses don’t have that luxury.
Many makers purchase silver in smaller amounts as needed, meaning we’re often paying current market prices. When those prices remain elevated, it becomes increasingly difficult to absorb the additional costs while keeping products affordable.
It’s not just silver, either. Packaging, postage, tools, and general business expenses have all increased over recent years, creating additional pressure for small creative businesses.

Why we choose quality over shortcuts
When faced with rising costs, some businesses may look for ways to reduce expenses by using lower-quality materials. For us, that’s not a route we want to take.
Every piece of our sea glass jewellery is made using genuine sea glass and quality sterling silver because we believe jewellery should be made to last. We want our customers to enjoy pieces that can be worn and treasured for years to come.
Maintaining those standards sometimes means adjusting prices to reflect the true cost of creating handmade jewellery, but it also means ensuring every piece meets the quality our customers deserve.

The Value of Handmade
When you buy from a small jewellery business, you’re supporting far more than the materials used in a finished piece.
You’re supporting the hours spent searching for beautiful sea glass, the craftsmanship involved in transforming it into jewellery, the creativity behind each design, and the passion that drives independent makers to continue creating despite challenging economic conditions.
Handmade jewellery tells a story. In the case of sea glass, it’s a story that begins with the sea itself and continues through the hands of the maker before finding a home with someone who appreciates its uniqueness.

Looking Ahead
While no one can predict exactly where silver prices will go next, one thing remains certain: small jewellery businesses will continue adapting, creating, and doing their best to offer beautiful handmade pieces that are worth investing in.
We are incredibly grateful to everyone who chooses to support independent makers. Every order, recommendation, and kind review helps small businesses continue doing what they love.
Thank you for supporting us and for being part of our journey.
